This is the place you want to be if you’re interested in Sikhs in Alberta.
Whether you are a casual browser, or you are looking to learn more about the remarkable history of Sikhs in Alberta, or you are a seasoned scholar in search of primary documents, you will likely find what you’re looking for here … and maybe even discover a few surprises along the way.
The website holds thousands of documents: immigration records, voter’s lists, legal documents, provincial Hansard, police records, maps, photographs, and newspaper articles, as well as transcripts of conversations with Sikh pioneers and their descendants, interactive story maps, and much more.
The ASHProject is continually growing.
As Sikhs continue to make history and space in Alberta, the ASHProject is updating, editing, and revising as documents are recovered and more Sikh stories are shared. So far, this history focuses on the first half of the 20th century (1900-1950). Documents and stories from the 1960s and 1970s will be added over the next year (2023), followed by the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s.
